How to Patch a Hole in Drywall (Any Size)

Drywall damage looks like a handyman visit, but drywall is the most forgiving material in your house โ€” it's literally designed to be patched. The technique just scales with the hole: dents get spackle, doorknob holes get a mesh patch, and anything bigger gets the 'California patch,' which sounds like a surf move and works like magic.

What you'll need

โš ๏ธ Safety firstBefore cutting drywall, check for wires and pipes โ€” they run vertically from outlets and fixtures. Shine a flashlight into the hole first, cut shallow.

Step-by-step fix

1

Nail holes and dents: spackle, done

Press lightweight spackle in with a finger or 2-inch knife, scrape flush, dry 30 minutes, one more skim if it shrank, sand lightly, touch up paint.

2

Anchor pull-outs: fill the crater properly

Cut away any bulging paper facing, press setting-type compound into the void, let it harden, then skim a wider feathered coat over the top. Bulges telegraph through paint; flat wins.

3

Doorknob-size holes (up to ~4"): mesh patch

Stick the aluminum-center mesh patch over the hole. First coat: press compound through the mesh and feather 2 inches past. Dry. Second coat: feather 4โ€“6 inches past with the wide knife. The wide feather is the entire secret of invisibility.

4

Big holes: the California patch

Cut the hole into a clean rectangle. Cut scrap drywall 2 inches bigger each way; on its back, score and snap off the 2-inch border of gypsum but leave the paper face attached. The plug fits the hole, the paper flap replaces tape. Bed the flap in compound, skim, feather wide, two coats.

5

Really big damage: add backing

Screw a scrap of 1x3 inside the wall spanning the hole (screws through drywall into the wood at top and bottom), then screw a cut-to-fit drywall patch to it. Mesh tape the seams, three progressively wider coats.

6

Sand, prime, and match the texture

Sand with a fine sponge and a raking light (a flashlight held flat against the wall shows every flaw). Prime the patch โ€” paint over unprimed compound flashes dull forever. Textured wall? Match with spray texture, practice on cardboard first. Scan the wall with SpotFix AI if you're unsure of the texture type โ€” it identifies orange peel vs knockdown and what to buy.

Common questions

Spackle vs joint compound?
Spackle: small holes, fast dry, minimal shrink. Joint compound (mud): everything bigger, sands beautifully. Setting-type ('hot mud', 20/45/90-minute bags) for deep fills, premixed for skims.
Why can I still see the patch after painting?
Texture mismatch or paint flashing on unprimed mud. Prime the patch, repaint the whole wall corner-to-corner if the sheen is picky (eggshell and satin are unforgiving).
How do I find studs without a stud finder?
Outlets mount to stud sides; measure 16-inch intervals from one. Or rap the wall โ€” solid vs hollow. Magnets on a string find the drywall screws in seconds.
